A rough gravel footpath with raised lawns about two inches on each sideleads to the vestibule. There is a slight height difference from slabs outside to open church vestibule with noticeboard then a step down into the church. There may also be a mat in front of the step. The church is well lit by stained glass windows all round. Pews face north/south and east/west and are on a raised step. 


Brief description

Saxon stone church begun around 1030 AD and added to over the centuries. Grade I listed. May be built on old pagan temple site and certainly on an old Roman site.

Directions

The church is slightly hidden from view of the main road, B1257. Turn west at the Cresswell Arms pub in Appleton le Street onto Willow Bank, cross Willow Bank, pass two houses on the right then follow what appears to be a farm track veering right. There is no car parking here. The rough farm track leads to a gravel footpath between lawns that lead to the church. Although the church faces onto the B1257 road there is no access from this road, only from the rough track.

194 Hovingham/Malton bus stop outside Cresswell Arms in both directions.
