Brief description
"Battle Library is a historic public library located at 420 Oxford Road in west Reading. It first opened in 1908, funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and is noted for its distinctive red-brick architecture with Bath stone detailing and a decorative cupola. The building features elegant interiors, including stained glass, a central top-lit reading room, and original plasterwork, all reflecting early 20th-century civic design.
Today, Battle Library functions as a vibrant community hub. It offers free Wi-Fi, public computers, printing facilities, and a wide range of books for all ages, with no late fines. The library hosts various events and activities such as children’s rhyme-time, crafts, English classes, book groups, baby clinics, and seasonal celebrations. It is praised for its friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere, providing not just library services but also a safe, inclusive space for families and residents of all backgrounds.
Located about 15–20 minutes’ walk or a short bus ride from Reading town centre, Battle Library continues to play a key role in the social and cultural life of the community."
