Accessibility:

Two designated disability parking spaces. Accessible toilet facilities are available. Wheelchair access to the castle via a ramp from the car park to the hall. RADAR key doors grant level access to the hall and gardens, a key can be acquired from the shop for a hire cost which is refunded on return of the key. Spiral staircase access to the upper levels of the castle, no lift available. Flat gravel path through most of the main grounds with no steep gradients. A gradient map is available.

Braille guides and signs are not present and some areas are lit by only natural light.

No induction loop service available, no subtitles on any of the films visible.

Brief Description:

Belsay Castle was originally built in the 13th century, although the great fortified tower was built the century after. Belsay Hall, a small distance from the castle, was built in the 19th century and is currently shown unfurnished, showcasing the construction.

Directions:

Belsay Castle can be reached 14 miles Northwest of Newcastle, along the A696. Turn off left (west) after passing the Gallow Burn river, but before the Coal Burn river.

Transport:

The nearest train station is in Morpeth, about 9 miles away from the venue. A taxi service may be needed as no buses run from Morpeth to Belsay.

Alternatively, one could stop at Newcastle-upon-Tyne train station, 15 miles away from the venue. A bus service does travel but stops about a mile away from the castle.
