"For disabled access or deliveries to the Castle contact our Reception prior to your visit on 01476 871001. As a historical building, disabled access to the building is unfortunately limited. We hope that the following information will give you an understanding of the access that is available so you can plan your visit.
Parking & access to the top of the hill:
If you or a member of your party have limited mobility you can request a parking permit to drive up the hill. Parking is available with plenty of space to allow you to get wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility aids out of the car and assembled. You do not require a blue badge.
There is a single wheelchair on site that we loan to visitors on request.
Castle Access:
The Castle ground floor is accessible, without ramps or slopes. The entrance door is 80cm wide. Wheelchair users may access the Guard room, Portico, Castle kitchens, Pastry room, Gift shop and Tea rooms. There is no lift inside.
If some of your party plan to visit upstairs, our guides will, wherever possible, use our literature and books to keep you company if you are unable to join your party. There are plenty of chairs in the upstairs rooms that you are welcome to sit on to take a rest at any time.
Guide and Assistance dogs are permitted inside the castle. We do not have a hearing loop.
At the castle we have Wi-Fi so that our visitors can download an app on which they can hear an audio tour. We recommend you bring your own ear/headphones but a basic set will be available to purchase. Please note, they have only standard earphone plugs.
Garden Access
The gardens are tricky to negotiate because of the nature of their situation on a hillside. Whilst it is possible in a mobility scooter/power chair to get into the rose gardens which are paved, the gravel paths that lead to the garden and the gradient combine to make this hard work with a standard wheelchair.
There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor at the Castle: 3.9m long, 1.35m at the narrowest point, opening to 2.7m. There is a baby/child change facility here. We do not have adult change facilities.
At the Engine Yard there are disabled toilets situated in the café and externally.
Free Disabled Tickets:
We appreciate that access is limited for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility so we do not charge a ticket fee to people whose limited mobility means they do not have full access to open areas of the castle and grounds.
Engine Yard:
The Engine Yard (which is located at the bottom of the hill) has a variety of shops and cafes. There are dedicated disabled parking places.
There are disabled toilets situated in the café and externally.
All store doors are wide enough to accept wheelchairs and most stores are ground floor only. Some stores have upper floors and due to the historic nature of the buildings, there are no lifts; staff will be happy to assist wherever possible."
Brief description
"Belvoir Castle’s history dates back to the eleventh century. It is the ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland, where the family have lived in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years.
Crowning a hill, the Castle’s turrets and towers rise over the Vale of Belvoir like an illustration in a romantic fairy-tale. The name Belvoir – meaning ‘beautiful view’ in French, and pronounced today as ‘beaver’ – dates back to Norman times.
Four castles have stood on this spot since 1067, and it’s a pretty perfect location for a fortified castle. Looking over the battlements from the North Terrace of the current Castle, you can see for miles over the counties of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire."
