The first floor of Bishop's Waltham Museum is accessed via a wooden staircase. The Palace car park is a short, level, walk to the museum with a gravel path.  For wheelchair visitors and those with decreased mobility it is only the ground floor of the building that is accessible. Access to the first floor is via a wooden staircase. Please note that the Pondside Gate is not currently suitable for wheelchairs or push chairs due to the loose surface. We hope this will be rectified soon."

Brief description

In the Middle Ages Bishop’s Waltham Palace was one of the finest residences of the Bishops of Winchester, who were among the richest churchmen in Europe. First built by Henry of Blois in the 12th century, the complex was remodelled and extended in the 14th and 15th centuries, becoming a palace capable of housing the king and his court on a number of occasions, as well as the bishop and his household. The palace was badly damaged in the Civil War (1642–9) and subsequently abandoned. Admiral Sir Andrew Browne Cunningham, one of Britain’s most distinguished naval commanders of modern times, lived here after the Second World War. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/bishops-waltham-palace/history/

"Unfortunately we do not have toilet facilities at the museum - the nearest WC is in the Basingwell Street car park (300m).  Sorry, we do not have a café either, but the town has many delicious cafes, bars and restaurants just over the road - click here for more information.  We have a small number of cards and books on Bishop’s Waltham on sale within the museum."
