Accessibility:

The zoo has a number of old listed buildings which may be difficult for wheelchair users to enter. Most paths are laid to tarmac, with ramped access to most buildings. However, there are a number of moderately steep ramps exiting the Reptile House, Aquarium and Bug World. The Twighlight World is a nocturnal exhibit, so has low levels of lighting. There are 5 disability parking bays situated near to the zoo's entrance. Accessible toilets are located at various points within the grounds. Assistance dogs are welcome, with proof of registration. "We have a small number of mobility scooters and manual wheelchairs available for hire. To find out more about this service, including availability or to pre-book a scooter or wheelchair for the day of your visit please email info@bristolzoo.org.uk or call us on 0117 4285 300."

Brief Description:

Bristol zoo gardens was opened on the 11th July 1836, making it the 5th oldest zoo in the world. It has successfully managed to save 175 different species of animal from extinction. Since opening it's doors to the public there have been over 90 million visitors to the zoo, and they continue to educate people with daily talks as well as focusing on conservation and research projects. Part of the 12-acre site will be redeveloped into housing while the remaining gardens will be open for the public to enter free of charge. This section will include a children's play area and the theatre for cultural and education talks, workshops and seasonal events. The zoo's Monkey Temple and entrance will also be retained - the latter will become the Clifton Conservation Hub including a public café and exhibition space. It will also become the home of the Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project"
