Castle Point/Canvey Island Transport Museum
Details
Accessibility:
Exhibits are housed in an old bus depot and as such there are a number of uneven surfaces and in places care is needed. The ground floor areas are reasonably accessible to all visitors but access to the upper floors (the model railway is housed on the first floor) is more difficult and via staircases. From the bus garage area there are some 14 steps to a landing followed by 3 further (quite awkward) steps to gain access to the model railway area. There is alternative access to the model railway area but this is via a steeper staircase of 15 steps and a further 3 steps into the room. The second floor level (open during more busy periods as an additional tea room/café area to that at ground level) is accessed via a further 17 steps. There is a wider gentler sloped staircase to the second floor level in the NE corner of the depot comprising a total of 35 steps and 2 landings. As of June 2019, there is no lift/stairlift to access the upper areas although the museum has been exploring ways of improving access at a future date if/when funds allow. Generally access onto the vehicles is not permitted, although one double decker bus is opened for visitors to get aboard, this involves a step up of approximately 40cm onto the rear platform of the bus and a second step onto the lower seating area of some 25cm.
