"Getting to the museum:

The museum is in Stewart Park in Middlesbrough, it is about a five minute walk from the main car park up to the museum. The closest train station to the museum is Marton Station, a five minute walk to the entrance of Stewart Park. This station is unstaffed with ramped access to the platform. However there is a kerb from the car park onto the platforms making it quite difficult for somebody in a wheelchair to gain access.

Accessible parking:

There are two carparks for the museum. The main carpark is at the entrance of the park and has six accessible parking bays. Please be aware that there is a five minute walk from the carpark to the museum with the final part of this being a steep uphill climb. There is a carpark directly outside the museum with six accessible parking bays available if you are a blue badge permit holder. Access is via ‘The Grove’ entrance to Stewart Park off the A172 ‘Stokesley Road’.

Entrances:

From the main carpark in the park you approach the museum from the side of the building, the entrance is around the corner, to the left. From the carpark directly outside the museum the entrance is at the front of the museum. The entrance is along a gentle downhill slope to a set of automatic doors. The external door opens inwards and the lobby door opens outwards.

Carers/Companions Entrance fee:

There is a concessionary rate for disabled people and carers are free. With the ‘Max Card’ one child goes free with one full paying adult. There is no fast track entrance system, but if you need assistance when queueing please ask a member of staff.

Getting around the site/ lifts:

The museum has three floors. You enter at ground level, the exhibitions are in the basement and the café and learning space is on the first floor. There are two lifts within the building. One lift takes you directly from reception into the exhibition in the basement. The other allows access to all floors. Seating is available throughout the museum.

Accessible toilets:

There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor near the entrance doors. The facilities in this toilet include an alarm pull switch and baby change station. The accessible toilet is now RADAR key operated. The bathroom will be locked and a key can be borrowed from the museum reception desk (during school holidays) or from the onsite café if the museum is closed. There is no Changing Place facility in the museum however there is one within Stewart Park in the Vocational Training Centre. Please see Changing Places for further information about this facility.

Parent and child facilities:

The baby change facility is within the accessible toilet on the ground floor. We will do all we can to help mothers who wish to breastfeed in the building. There is seating in the galleries and café, but there are no rooms available for breastfeeding in private.

Assistance dogs:

Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome. A water bowl is available on request.

Hearing Loop:

There is a hearing loop available in reception.

Wheelchair hire:

A wheelchair and walker are available to borrow during your visit. Please speak to a member of staff.

Relaxed openings:

Relaxed sessions are available for anybody who would benefit from a visit during a quieter time. Additional noises will be reduced, lighting levels more consistent and additional smells reduced. These take place the last Sunday of each month from 10.30am until 11.30am. This is not a dedicated relaxed session and we cannot guarantee the low level of visitors."
