Accessibility

There is limited on-street parking available at nearby meters. Blue Badge holders are entitled to an additional hour of free on-street parking, but they must first make payment up to the maximum time allowed. The nearest disability parking bays are on Lawrence Street (140 yards/metres) and Bramerton Street (320 yards/metres). Only guide dogs and registered assistance dogs are allowed on the site. 

It is unsuitable for wheelchair access - there are many stairs inside the house, and a gravel path in the garden. Light levels inside are low for conservation purposes. An induction loop is available. Contact the venue directly for further accessibility information.

A handsome 18th Century townhouse, home to Victorian historian and satirist Thomas Carlyle and his wife Jane. It now contains Carlyle memorabilia, including books, paintings, and furniture,

Directions

Cheyne Row is on the north side of the River Thames, close to Albert Bridge. From the A3212 turn north into Cheyne Walk, and Cheyne Row is the second street to the left.

Transport

The nearest Underground stations are South Kensington (0.9 mile) and Sloane Square (1 mile). Victoria Station is 2 miles away.

Carlyle's House is well served by buses. Take the 11, 19, 22, 49 or 319 bus to Carlyle Square. Walk south down Bramerton Street, and turn west into Glebe Place. Follow the road into Cheyne Row. Alternatively, take the 170 bus to Albert Bridge. Cheyne Row is behind the statue of Thomas Carlyle on the Embankment.


Amenities

There is no disability toilet on the site. The only onsite toilet is an outdoor Victorian privy. There are disability toilets at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital (0.8 miles) and the National Army Museum (0.5 miles). There are many shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants on the nearby King's Road.
