Details
Accessibility:
There is a main car park at the entrance to the reserve at Grid Ref: SN 605164 1 mile east of the A476 on a minor road, (and another, also with its entrance through a kissing gate at Grid Ref: SN 591599 just east of the A476 on a minor road) but it is very small and doesn’t have any disability spaces. The entrance itself is through a kissing gate. There are good tracks throughout the reserve, but some of them are steep, rocky and rutted and therefore not suitable for wheelchair users.
Brief Description:
Carmel National Nature Reserve is home to the only turlough (seasonal lake) in Britain, and its entrance is also through a kissing gate beside a very shallow layby on a minor road at SN 606167, about 300 yards northeast of main car park (at SN 605164 1 mile east of the A476 on a minor road). There are walks around the large reserve (which has explanatory notice boards with reserve maps) where you can see the variety of trees, plants and mosses as well as animals and birds. There is the lake, woodlands, caves – with bats – and grasslands.

"A nature reserve built around a massive quarry near Llandybie, and one of the best places to see bluebells in Carmarthenshire, best seen between the end of March and May. You'll also find the intriguing disappearing Turlough Lake fed only by underground water - it vanishes in the summer!
Along with the bluebells you’ll also see (and smell!) swathes of Wild Garlic.
Keep an eye out for the Greater Butterfly Orchid, Birds Foot Trefoil and Lily of the Valley while you're exploring.
The nearest car park is located off the A476, near SA14 7TL, or near the village of Pentregwenlais near Llandybie. Grid Ref SN589161. "
