Brief description:
Chester Racecourse has been the home of racing since 1539 and is the oldest racecourse in Great Britain. In Roman times the area had a harbour and sat on the River Dee and ts Anglo-Saxon name is The Roodee which actually means 'land between the cross'. By the Middle Ages the area silted up and eventually became the site of the racecourse. The earliest recorded race is believed to have been held in 1512 when the first recorded prize, a hand painted wooden bowl was presented to the winner.
The Chester Races are normally held between May and September each year and a number of events are held which include: Boodles May Festival, City Day, Ladies Day, Chester Cup Day, Summer Saturday, Family Fun Day, MBNA Roman Day; £10 off Friday Night Meetings and MBNA Autumn Festival Friday. Please check the venue's website for further details of dates and prices for these and other events.
