Accessibility

"The Town Hall is an old building and not wholly wheelchair friendly. The Museum though is set on the ground floor and should anybody using a wheelchair or walking aid wish to visit us, please send someone into the Museum entrance in the Council Chamber, and we will direct you to a level entry into the building to visit the Museum. Wheelchairs will be able to access the two corridors leading into the cells and will be able to stop at the cell doors to see the exhibits inside. For those with a walking aid and those unfirm on their feet, the corridor floor is uneven due to the age of the building. The doorways leading into the cells are low so please mind your heads."

Brief description

"The Museum was formed in the early 1980's by a group of very enthusiastic people who felt there should be some record made of 'Cowbridge past' and having it based in Cowbridge.

The Museum is housed in the cells of the Cowbridge Town Hall, right in the centre of the town. The Town Hall itself is a modern building having been built in 1829. It was built over a much older building which had over the years been called a prison, bridewell, house of correction and even for a short period the County Gaol. It was first licensed as a prison in 1576, but there is some evidence that it was being used as a prison as early as 1525.

All the museum exhibits are housed in six cells set in two corridors in the centre of the ground floor of the Town Hall.

The Museum is open the first and third Saturdays of every month from 10:30am until 04:00pm and is accessed via the door in the front of the building that leads into the Council Chamber. Admission is free, but donations are always welcome. We do occasionally open on other occasions which will be advertised locally and now also on the website."
