The Cowper Memorial Congregational Church has been witnessing to the gospel from its position in Dereham Market Place since it was founded in 1874 on the site that had been previously the home of William Cowper.
Norfolk was a county that William Cowper had come to love early in his life, the family were connected with the Donne's, a family honourably known all over Norfolk. Much of Cowper's memories of his early years was concerned with visits to and from the Donne's, racing around the garden with the Donne's children, picking currants in the orchard.
In 1795 Cowper moved to Norfolk with Mary Unwin. They originally stayed at North Tuddenham, then at Dunham Lodge near Swaffham and then Mundesley before finally settling in East Dereham, where both of them died and are buried side by side in what is now called the Cowper Chapel, in St Nicholas Church, East Dereham.
William Cowper is probably best known to most people as a hymnwriter, especially the combined work he did with his great friend John Newton known as The Olney Hymns. In his day Cowper wrote a number of hymns that are still loved and sung today, one being "God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform"."
