Accessibility:

There is no car parking on site and the nearest car park is 500 metres away, however visitors with limited mobility can be set down at the main entrance. There is level access into the castle and also ramps in place. Toilets are available, including wheelchair accessible toilets. Assistance dogs are welcome.


Brief Description:

Barnard Castle is a ruined medieval castle in the small market town of Barnard Castle in County Durham. It was built in 1125 and is a Grade I Listed Building. It is named after its founder Bernard de Balliol. On visiting the Castle you will see views over the Tees Gorge, A sensory garden of tactile objects and plants, and Richard III’s boar emblem carved above the inner ward.

Directions:

From Darlington via A67 (15m). Take the Coniscliffe Road/A67 towards Barnard Castle for 14.3 miles. At the roundabout continue straight onto Bede Road/A67 and continue to follow the road until you reach your destination, following the brown tourist signs.


From Kendal via A685 and A66 (45.2m). Follow Appleby Road/A685 towards Barnard Castle for 11.5 miles. Follow A686 and A66 to A67 for 33 miles. Continue to follow A67 until you reach your destination, following the brown tourist signs.
