Brief Description:

Epworth Old Rectory is a Grade I Listed building which was built in 1709 but is now a Museum owned and maintained by the British Methodist Church. It was home to Reverend Samuel Wesley and his wife and 19 children. His sons John and Charles Wesley developed the Methodist Churches with assistance from their brother Samuel and sisters. From December 1716 and January 1717 it was said that a haunting took place in the Old Rectory in the form of a poltergeist which was nicknamed Old Jeffrey by their oldest daughter, although it has been suggested that the poltergeist claims were fraudulent. The museum gives an insight into how the Wesley family lived and the influences they had during the 18th Century. Guided tours are available.
