Brief Description:

The Silkstone Waggonway is a bridleway which runs through Silkstone Village with public right of way. It was previously a horse drawn railway route which was built by the Barnsley Canal Navigation Company in 1809. It was built to transport the coal from the collieries in Silkstone Valley to the canal terminus in Cawthorne. In 1830 Robert C Clarke built an extension to Silkstone Common and to his colliery developments in Moorend. It is now a popular walking route approximately 3.34 miles long, which takes in the historical heritage of the area.
