Accessibility:
There are 4 blue badge parking bays on site. Further parking is in the village which is a 150 metre/yard uphill walk from the castle. Most parts are wheelchair accessible on a firm, level path, except the gun battery which has limited access and the gatehouse which has steps at the entrance. Access to the priory via 40m/43yard of smooth grass. Manual wheelchair users may wish to bring an assistant. Two wheelchairs are available on loan. There is a unisex and wheelchair accessible toilet on site, which also includes baby changing facilities. There is a hearing induction loop situated in the shop. Assistance dogs are welcome.

Brief Description:
Tynemouth Priory and Castle has a 2000 year history. When you visit you can discover the story of the site from its original beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, an Anglican monastery, a royal castle, artillery fort and a coastal defence. The gun battery built underground into the cliffs was designed to defend the Tyne in the First and Second World Wars.

From South Shields via A19 (9m). This route has tolls. Take Ocean Road/A183, A194, A185, A19, A187 and A193 to Front Street in Tynemouth for 8.7 miles. Continue on Front Street. Drive to Pier Road.
From Whitley Bay via Broadway/A193 (2.7m). Take A193 to Front Street in Tynemouth for 2.5 miles. Continue on Front Street. Drive to Pier Road.
