Escomb is about two miles from Bishop Auckland town. The Saxon church is in the centre of Escomb village surrounded by Saxon Green road and is accessed from a narrow pathway on the south side. The tarmac pathway leads to a slight stone step up to the entrance door and there are three steps down a couple of flagstones in, just inside the entrance. These may be unevenly spaced. The key to the church is available at number 28 Saxon Green, Escomb. (Information correct prior to 2022). The church is whitewashed, light and airy, with flagstone floor and very high ceiling. It is a small, narrow church with just a dozen pews in total.
Brief description
Escomb Saxon church is one of the most complete Saxon churches in Europe. The church was built around 675AD and is still in regular weekly use. The first records are from 990AD. It is on the register of the Small Pilgrim Places network and hosts services in the Celtic tradition. It is a small, narrow, high-ceilinged stone church with narrow pews and an ancient stone altar.
