Accessibility

There is a car park reasonably near to Hill Top for those able to walk a short distance.  In addition there are two disabled bays available see website for more details.

  • Grounds, including toilets partly accessible, some steps, uneven paths
  • Assistance dogs only in the house
  • Building - many steps with handrail to first floor
  • Lighting in the house can be dark on dull days. It may take a few moments for your eyes to adjust

Brief description

Hill Top was owned by the well known children's writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter.  Many of her books were written in this small cottage and the contents have been kept exactly as she left them.  It easy to recognize scenes from her books.

Directions

By road: Take the B5286 and B5285 from Ambleside (6 miles), or the B5285 from Coniston (7 miles) car park is small, so at times it can be difficult to find a space.

By bus: Leave the car behind and take the Cross Lake Shuttle (not NT) from Bowness to Hill Top. Call 015394 45161 for details.
