Accessibility:

Metered parking is available close to the museum - charges apply from 8.30am - 6.30pm Monday to Friday. There are also two car parks nearby: Union Car Parks, 70-78 St Thomas Street, London SE1 (6-minute walk from HMS Belfast) and Snowfields NCP, Kipling Street, Bankside, London SE1 (8-minute walk from HMS Belfast).

Some areas of the ship - mainly below decks - are not accessible to wheelchairs, however, there is wheelchair access to the main deck. Weight restrictions (combined weight of 275kg) apply when using the accessible lift. Wheelchairs are available to loan. Assistance dogs are welcome to many areas but some areas below deck may be difficult to navigate. Some areas have been modified to allow for wheelchair access. See the accessibility statement here: http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/hms-belfast/access.

Sadly, there is no Shopmobility motorised scooter hire in central London,(please see http://www.transportforall.org.uk/personal/mobility/ ), however, all of the latest-built taxes and buses must be disability accessible.  The one exception to this is the No.15 London heritage route which runs with the iconic old AEC Routemaster double-decker bus (built between the 1950s and 1960s) which has a rear open entrance to enable passengers to get on and off quickly.

Brief Description:

HMS Belfast, now a museum, was originally a light cruiser built for the Royal Navy. She was launched on St Patrick's Day 1938 and commissioned in early August 1939, just before the second World War. The ship took part in several missions during the war, including supporting the Normandy Landings.

Now the ship is a museum and you can explore it and see what life was like aboard this floating city as you weave your way through the bowels of the ship and climb up and down ladders across all nine decks.

Transport:

The London Congestion Charge Zone runs from Monday to Friday and motorists have ample signage to alert them to the entry points; only vehicles that are registered by the DVLA as ‘Disabled Tax-Exempt’ are NOT liable to the Charge.  Disabled Tax-Exempt drivers can also use the Dartford Crossing without charge. The tunnel is a river crossing to the east of London which links the north and south of the M25 orbital motorway.  Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) automatically identifies the registration number plate of these vehicles so that their owners do not need to take any additional action.

If travelling by car, for specific directions it is best to use a satnav, but please be aware that the route may take you in and out of the Central London Congestion Charge zone. It is best to approach Central London using public transport.

There is an excellent public transport system throughout London and Greater London. For more information on buses, trains (including the Tube), airports and river traffic please contact Transport For London on 0343 222 1234 (Textphone 0800 112 3456). For further details on accessible services please see the website: https://tfl.gov.uk/
