Brief description

"Explore life in Cheltenham’s only Victorian home open to all, the birthplace of composer Gustav Holst in 1874.

In Holst Victorian House you can explore the lives of some of the inhabitants, including Holst’s parents, both in Victorian and more modern times. The house is a time capsule of 19th century life with a working Victorian kitchen, Victorian bedroom, scullery and nursery.

Composer Gustav Holst’s life and times can be discovered in his Music Room, complete with the piano on which he composed The Planets.

The Museum hosts a range of exhibitions, events and children’s activities throughout the year, including its popular ‘Bake Back in Time’ events using the working coal-fired range.

Whether or not you have visited before, Holst Victorian House look forward to welcoming you to 4 Clarence Road and sharing with you the experience of living in a Victorian home.

Rebranding: The Holst Birthplace Museum officially becomes ‘Holst Victorian House’ on 10 September 2021.  We remain the house in which British composer Gustav Holst was born in 1874; where you can hear more about his life and view some personal items, including a piano on which he composed The Planets."

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittville

"The Holst Birthplace Museum was founded by Gustav's daughter, Imogen Holst, in 1974 during centenary ceremonies for Holst's birth. The museum houses a number of mementoes, including the piano on which Holst composed The Planets, as well as pictures, books, some letters and manuscripts. The Holst Birthplace Museum is one of only three composer museums in England.

The museum consists of four rooms, which were furnished from the collections of Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum. The sitting room shows how a Regency sitting room would have looked in the 1830s. The bedroom is probably the room where Gustav Holst was born and it was furnished in the style of the 1870s. The music room contains many items associated with Holst and his music, notably the oil portrait of the composer from the 1920s and his piano on which much of 'The Planets' and his most famous works were composed. The kitchen and scullery show visitors how Victorian households looked."
