Accessibility:

The zoo has been made accessible to all, with flat surfaces and only a few gentle slopes. Access to the pavilion can be made via the side entrance for wheelchair users. Disability parking is located near to the main entrance, on hard standing ground. Wheelchairs are available to hire. Call ahead on 01227 721286 to book in advance. Accessible toilets are located throughout the zoo and are marked on the site map. Assistance dogs are not permitted into the zoo.


Brief Description:

Howletts zoo is home to over 400 animals and has the largest herd of African Elephants in the UK. It is set in 90 acres of land and offers and educational and fun day out for all. Originally set up as a private zoo in 1957 by John Aspinall, it was later opened to the public in 1975. It is known for it's conservation and successful breeding programmes of some of the worlds rarest and most endangered species. The zoo also dedicates itself to re introducing these animals back into their natural habitats.

Open everyday except Christmas day.

Summer opening: 31st March - 28th Oct 9.30am - 6pm

Winter Opening 29th Oct - 30th March 9.30am - 5pm

Admission Prices: Adult £16.95.  Child: £13.95  (3-15 years). Under 3's: Free. Family Ticket (2 Adults + 2 children) £54.95.


Directions:

Situated 5 miles from Canterbury. Head E from Canterbury along A257 for 4.6 miles, turning right onto Bekesbourne lane when you reach Canterbury golf club on your left. This road will lead onto Bekesbourne Hill (all same road). At the end of Bekesbourne Hill, turn left back onto Bekesbourne Lane and continue for approximately 0.9 miles. The animal park will be on your left hand side. OS TR 196567

Nearest train station Bekesbourne. A mini bus service runs from the station to the zoo during peak times. Call ahead on 01227 721286 to check availability. Easily accessed via car with free parking.

Amenities:

Accessible toilets are located throughout the zoo and marked on  the map. There are two main areas within the compound serving hot and cold meals and beverages, and cater to a wide variety of dietary requirements. There is also a gift shop selling souvenirs, clothing and much more.
