"Kiruna Church (Swedish: Kiruna kyrka) is a church building in Kiruna, Sweden, and is one of Sweden's largest wooden buildings. The church was built between 1909 and 1912, designed by the architect Gustaf Wickman. The church exterior is built in a Gothic Revival style, while the altar is in Art Nouveau. The Church was moved during two days in August 2025 a distance of 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the east due to the expansion of the Kiruna mine.[1] "

"Once voted Sweden's most beautiful building erected before 1950. Kiruna church was inaugurated in 1912 and built in the form of a Sámi hut. Kiruna Church is really also shaped like a Sami hut (lavvú), with a wide base and a tapered top. The light comes in from above because the windows in the lower walls are made of colored glass and only the upper windows are clear. It has been called the “sanctuary of the wandering people” and was built specifically to be a gathering place for the entire population of the new city. Hjalmar Lundbohm envisioned a church where everyone could feel devotion and therefore wanted to avoid direct Christian symbols. Bishop Olof Bergqvist, however, requested that the church’s provision be clearly emphasized. Therefore, there is only one cross in the entire building, made by Christian Eriksson.
Church relocationDue to the city transformation, Kiruna Church will be moved in one piece during 2025 to a new location between the cemetery and the new city centre. The church is now closed for visitors until the opening at the new location at the end of 2026. Then Kiruna church can be visited every day of the year. During summer there is a guide on site and also the opening hours are a bit longer than usual. At ceremonies, the church is closed.

Transport

2025: "Kiruna is on the E10 road, connecting Luleå with Norway and passing near Gällivare (south of Kiruna) and Narvik (on the Norwegian coast). A short road connects to Kurravaara at the Torne river and ends there. Another road connects Kiruna with Nikkaluokta close to Kebnekaise and is used by tourists to get to the mountains. It passes by or nearby several villages in the Kalix river valley.
Buses connect Kiruna with major towns in Norrbotten province and villages nearby and in the wider region. The railway connects Luleå with Gällivare, Kiruna and Narvik. Although built to serve the mine, Swedish Rail runs daily passenger traffic on the line: a night train from Narvik to Stockholm, a day train from Narvik to Luleå (connecting with a second night train to Stockholm and Gothenburg), and trains to Luleå and Narvik that start and finish in Kiruna. The latter is known as Karven and popular for day trips to the mountains near Abisko, Björkliden and Riksgränsen, particularly in winter. Additional long-distance trains are run by Transdev in summer. In 2013, the railway station was moved 2 km away from the city centre, so walking is possible but not recommended. There is a free shuttlebus for every departure and arrival which starts from Kiruna bus station in the city centre.
Kiruna Airport is southeast of the city, 8 km by road. A few daily flights connect Kiruna with Stockholm, either directly or via Luleå or Umeå. An airport bus is available for all flights to and from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.[53] "

"In winter, the Icehotel in nearby Jukkasjärvi and the northern lights attract tourists. The long and certain snow cover, which generally lasts from October to May, and frozen lakes and rivers facilitate cross-country and alpine skiing, dog sledding and snowmobiling. There is ice climbing in the mountains and ice skating on lakes or rivers. The annual Snow Festival is held over the last weekend of January[57] and includes scooter jumping, reindeer racing and an ice sculpture contest.[18][58][59] "
