The park and gardens are fully accessible to wheelchair users.  The best entrance to use is situated at the bottom of the hill on New Road (near Monks Close).

"Lesnes Abbey is a unique green oasis, 10 minutes’ walk from Abbey Wood Train Station. At 88 hectares, this large site has lots of things to do and explore including woodland, heath, meadow and ponds, alongside formal parkland and gardens with views across the London skyline.

Visit the ruins of a 12th Century Abbey, dig in a prehistoric fossil pit or keep fit in our recreation and play areas.  Visitors can attend a range of activities, classes, events and workshops at Lesnes Abbey Lodge, which is also available for private hire (see What’s On and Hire Lesnes Abbey Lodge pages for further details). Lesnes Abbey Woods is managed by Bexley Council and is part Parks and Open Spaces.

Did you know that Lesnes Abbey is the second largest open space in the London Borough of Bexley? The largest is space is Foots Cray Meadows.

Lesnes Abbey Woods has been managed by the Council since 1986 and been a public park since 1930.  In 2014, Bexley Council Lesnes Abbey Woods was awarded Parks for People funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The grant enabled the site to be significantly developed, including:

  • Building a new Lesnes Abbey Lodge that hosts conferences, school workshops, leisure activities and meetings
  • A catering kiosk concession for park users
  • Improved park facilities including landscaping, way finding and gardens"

Lesnes Abbey Woods is only 10 minutes’ walk from Abbey Wood Train Station.

"Lesnes Abbey is situated off the B213 Abbey Road, Abbey Wood. There are two car parks about 10 minutes walk away, situated near Abbey Wood Station, Gayton Road and Felixstowe Road car parks.  There is limited parking can be found on Abbey Road and New Road.

There are bike stands just outside Lesnes Abbey Lodge, bicycles can be secured but are left at  owners risk.  There are many paths that are suitable for cycling and for younger riders we have a BMX track  in the Recreation Area on Abbey Road""

The park is on bus routes 229 (Thamesmead - Sidcup),  469 ( Woolwich to Erith), 301 ( Woolwich - Bexleyheath), 244 (Woolwich to Abbey Wood), 472 (North Greenwich - Abbey Wood) , B11, 180 (North Greenwich - Erith).  Bus route 99 serves the woodlands via the Woolwich Road entrance. "With 88 hectares of woodland and park, there are plenty of lovely walks that you can explore with your dog/s. The Chestnuts Kiosk kindly provide water bowls for all those dogs that are thirsty after exploring the woods.

We ask owners to keep their dogs on their lead in the park area and dogs are not allowed in the play area and Monk's Garden.

Each week we feature Dog of the Week sign up to our Instagram and Twitter, we have met some super dogs who love exploring Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Recreation Area

This comprises of an extensive play area, junior BMX track, parkour, basketball courts and outdoor gym. There is something to enjoy whatever age you are."
