Brief description

Maesteg (or ‘Fair Field’ in English) is at the northernmost end of the Llynfi Valley and has been since the opening of ironworks in the area around the 1820s and 1830s. Maesteg is home to close to 21,000 residents, many of whom that have kept longstanding welsh traditions alive such as Mari Lwyd, a Christmas folk custom where locals create a hobby horse (‘Mari’) with someone underneath a cloak and horse skull who knocks on the doors of the town with a group of people singing how they wish to be let in for food and ale. The aim of Mari Lwyd is for the resident to deny ‘Mari’ entry by singing back why they can’t enter, however the ‘Mari’ can (and most likely will) try again multiple times and to win the resident must outwit them or give up, and let them in for some ale.
