Accessibility:

There is a free car park near to the museum, with disability spaces available. Wheelchairs can be used to access the underground area, but certain wheelchairs will not be allowed - for further details, please contact the museum directly before visiting. Under 5's are not able to go underground.  An Access Statement is available at the bottom of this page. The nature trails do not contain any steps, however some parts can be steep and in wet weather conditions , may be hard to access for those with limited mobility or wheelchairs. Some areas of the museum do have a ramp/lift in place to aid access. Baby changing facilities and accessible toilets are available. The train is fully accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, there is a fee for a return trip or single trip on the train.


Brief Description:

Opened in 1988 at the Caphouse Colliery site. The museum allows its visitors the opportunity to go down 450ft of one of the oldest working mines in England. A great all year round adventure can be had, with underground tours, a visitor centre (above ground), nature trails, train rides and more. Accessing the underground area requires a deposit of £3, which can be refunded upon leaving the underground, or left as a donation to the museum.

Open daily from 10am to 5pm. Closed on December 24th-26th and January 1st.

Underground tour - £3 payable on entry which can either be donated to the museum, or collected back at the end of the tour.

Train ride - Single trip £1. Return trip £1.50.

Bus services run past the museum, with the Arriva 128 and 130 services stopping at a nearby bus stop, under 200 yards away from the museum. The nearest train station is Wakefield Westgate Station, approximately 6 miles away from the museum.

Amenities:

There is a café and gift shop on site which offers hot and cold foods and drinks. A menu can be downloaded from their website. Picnic areas are available. Free Wi-Fi is available to customers.
