Accessibility:

There are approximately three disability parking spaces on Old Market Street, relatively close to the castle entrance, a few yards/metres to the north east.

The other roads around the castle are either double yellow-line-marked or permit holders only. Morrisons car park makes up the western border of the castle site and there is flat access to the castle perimeter from the eastern side of the car park, but you will need to walk around the entrance on the south side to gain entry. Alternatively, there is level access to the pedestrianised shopping area of Neath at the western and southern edges of the car park, but these are slightly further from the castle.

There are toilets available at the railway station approximately 0.3 miles south-west of the castle through the pedestrianised area.

Brief Description:

Neath Castle is a Grade II listed Norman castle ruin located in the heart of Neath and bordered by the River Neath to the north, Morrisons supermarket car park to the west, Castle Street to the south and Castle View to the east.

Robert, Earl of Gloucester / nominal Lord of Glamorgan, is said to have built the castle between 1114 and 1130 although Richard I de Grenville, Lord of Neath, also may have had a hand in its construction. It was captured, destroyed and rebuilt several times up to the late 14th century and was in use until the 17th century. Since the 18th century it has been a recreational area for the town.
