Brief description
"Originally the town grew from the wool trade, but it is now best known for its parish church's yew trees and the local Rococo Garden. The village is mainly constructed of locally quarried Cotswold stone. Many of the buildings feature south-facing attic rooms once used as weavers' workshops.
Painswick stands on a hill in the Stroud district, overlooking one of the Five Valleys, between Stroud and Gloucester. It has narrow streets and traditional architecture.
It has a cricket and rugby team and there is a golf course on the outskirts of the town. Painswick Beacon is in the nearby hills."
2021: "Painswick Tourist Information Centre is located at our new premises in the Grave Digger's Hut in the corner of St. Mary's churchyard.
We are a voluntary service set up to encourage tourism in Painswick and the surrounding areas. We provide visitors with information on local places of natural and historical interest, events, local accommodation, transport, restaurants, cafes and shops.
We also sell maps, books and souvenirs.
Please call in to see us on your next visit to our beautiful village or contact us below."

Directions"By Car: Painswick is on the A46 road between Cheltenham and Stroud – about 3 miles north of Stroud. Car parking in the narrow streets of Painswick is often problematical. It is suggested that you should try and park in the Stamages Lane Car Park at the south end of the village (charges 20 p per hour at time of writing, 2021). For “satnav” enthusiasts the post code GL6 6UZ will find the car park."
