Parish Church of All Saints, Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire
Details
Accessibility
The church is elevated above road level. It is accessed in two ways: one through the small group of houses on the first turnoff the B1222, or round the corner and through gates leading across the graveyard up a long, steep flagstone path to the church. This may not be easy access for a disability scooter as one is seen parked on the roadside in google earth. The main entrance has vehicle access and parking is possible outside the church hall/community centre next to the main ie the first entrance. There is a step up from the main aisle to the pews. The church is reasonably well lit with a very high ceiling and sturdy pillars among the pews.
Brief description
Sherburn in Elmet has historical associations dating back to possibly Roman times and the field adjoining the church once housed the palace of the Kings of Elmet and was given to the Archbishops of York on Athelstan's conversion to Christianity. The church itself is Norman and dates back to 1120 AD but buildings on the site date back to Anglo-Saxon times. It is a large village church with a ring of 8 bells.
