Brief description

St Mary's is the sole surviving building of an earlier priory. It is a Grade I listed building, 12th - 13th C, restored in 1873 by J H Walton with stained glass by Morris & Co. A small monastic type settlement may have existed here in the Anglian period, shown in the name Monkton. The priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. The church has beautiful architecture, stained glass and memorials and is a wildlife haven. The village has a Norwegian pine maypole and a duck pond and cattle graze on the common land of the village green.
