This is not as good as it gets for our nation. The following pages set out our party’s vision of a fairer, more ambitious future where everyone can achieve their potential, regardless of circumstance or background.

Being tied to Westminster means all risk and no reward for our nation. Wales is languishing at the bottom of too many league tables, our economy is stagnating, our transport network is creaking, and the lack of control over our natural resources means that we are energy-rich but fuel-poor.

What sets Plaid Cymru apart is a record of not taking Wales for granted and always putting the interests of our communities and nation first.

After 14 years of Tory cuts and weak opposition from Labour, Plaid Cymru offers a real alternative for Wales.

We will fight every day for the billions owed to Wales from the HS2 high-speed rail project, and for a fair funding model which funds our country according to need, not population.

This will enable us to invest in our public services and better reward our workforce.

By supporting families and by devolving powers to ensure that more of the decisions that affect Wales are made in Wales, we will address the cost of living crisis and provide Welsh solutions to Welsh problems.

Our ambition can be seen in our confidence that Wales can and should run its own affairs as an outward looking independent nation.

"Plaid Cymru (English: /plaɪd ˈkʌmri/ PLYDE KUM-ree;[31] Welsh: [plaid ˈkəmri], lit. 'Party of Wales'; officially Plaid Cymru – the Party of Wales, and often referred to simply as Plaid) is a centre-left to left-wing, Welsh nationalist political party in Wales, committed to Welsh independence from the United Kingdom.[32][33] It campaigns on a platform of social democracy and civic nationalism. The party is a strong supporter of the European Union and is a member of the European Free Alliance (EFA).[34][35] The party holds 4 of 32 Welsh seats in the UK Parliament, 12 of 60 seats in the Senedd,[36] and 202 of 1,231 principal local authority councillors.[30] Plaid was formed in 1925 under the name Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru (English: The National Party of Wales) and Gwynfor Evans won the first Westminster seat for the party at the 1966 Carmarthen by-election.[37]

In September 2008, a senior Plaid assembly member spelled out her party's continuing support for an independent Wales. The then Welsh Minister for Rural Affairs, Elin Jones, told delegates at Plaid's annual conference in Aberystwyth that the party would continue its commitment to independence under the coalition with Welsh Labour.[47]

In 2014, the party's constitution included the following aims:

• Securing Welsh independence in Europe
• Economic prosperity, social justice and a healthy natural environment with decentralist socialism
• A national community with equal citizenship and respect for diversity
• Develop a bilingual society
• Promote Wales to the world and achieve United Nations membership[48]

While Wales remains part of the United Kingdom, Plaid Cymru want to see further powers devolved from the UK Government to Wales, including: broadcasting and communication powers, devolution of the Crown Estate, welfare and rail.[49][43][50][51]

The party opposes nuclear power and nuclear weapons (including the UK's Trident nuclear weapons programme).[52][53][54][55]

The party also favours lowering the voting age to 16 years old.[56] The voting age has already been lowered to include 16- and 17-year-olds for both Senedd elections[57] and local elections in Wales since 2020,[58] but not for UK general elections or police and crime commissioner elections: 18 is the minimum voting age for both of these.[58]

Plaid Cymru supports making social care "free at the point of need".[59][60][61]

In 2022, Plaid Cymru's policies included in its co-operation agreement with Welsh Labour included:

• Free school meals for all primary school children
• Free childcare for all two-year-olds
• Commitment to deal with second homes
• Creation of a national care service
• Long-term Senedd reform
• Reforming council tax
