Accessible by appointment only. Free parking can be found at the Village Hall. Pleshey castle is entered across a brick built bridge. Most of the area is laid to grass and could be unlevel under foot. Please contact directly for more accessibility information.


Brief Description:

The mound is reached across a 15th century brick bridge.

A late 11h century Norman motte and bailey castle where originally a stone keep sat on top of the 50ft motte. Pleshey Castles motte is said to be one of the largest in England. Most of the castle was dismantled in 1629 for building material, leaving the motte and other earthworks.

Directions:

Situated 7.8 miles NW of Chelmsford. Heading NE on the A1016/Chelmer Valley Road. At the roundabout take the first exit onto Valley Bridge. Turn right onto B1008. Continue following B1008 until you reach a small roundabout and continue straight over/second exit, and continue on B1008. After a short while take the left slip road at a main junction sign posted Gt.Valtham onto Chelmsford Road. Continue following Chelmsford Road onto Main Road. Bear left a the junction, turning left again at the next junction. Following this road will take you to Pleshey, where the Castle will be on your left.
