Brief description

https://www.torfaenmuseum.org.uk/

2026:

"Here you will find a wide range of resources whether you are looking for support with a research project, interested in the history of Torfaen or planning to visit us. Drawing upon over 40 years of collecting and study, we have plenty of stories to share. Through them, come and explore Torfaen’s fascinating heritage. Torfaen Museum was established by the Torfaen Museum Trust in 1978, a registered charity with the purpose and intention to “preserve, interpret, disseminate and celebrate local culture and bring the culture of other communities to the communities of Torfaen and beyond.”

Guided by this mission statement, the Trust has developed the Museum over the last 45 years so that it may showcase the history of Torfaen, from Pontypool town’s early foundation in the iron and tin industries to the mining communities of Blaenavon and the development of Cwmbran New Town in the 1950s. It is hoped that through its policies of collecting and interpreting these stories, the Trust may better bring to life the history of our county for both current and future generations.

The Museum itself is governed by a strong Board of Trustees and run by a small team of staff. This includes a Curator, Administrator, a team of front-of-house staff and several dedicated volunteers."

Transport

https://www.torfaenmuseum.org.uk/visiting-information/

2026:

"Bus: Pontypool is well served by local and regional bus services. From outside the local area you can reach the Museum from Cardiff, Cwmbran, Abergavenny or Hereford by taking the X3 service. The X24 service runs from Newport to Blaenavon, stopping at Pontypool on a regular basis. For other bus services there is information on the Traveline Cymru webpage, or you can call them on 0871 200 22 33.

From the bus station in Pontypool, turn right and walk along the main street, down the hill until you reach a small roundabout. From there, bear right and cross the bridge then follow the cobbled road up to the Museum front entrance.

Rail: Pontypool and New Inn Station

Train services to Pontypool are limited with our closest station being Pontypool & New Inn. Services running between Newport and Abergavenny stop at the station roughly every 2 hours. The National Rail website is a good place to start planning your journey.

From the station, there is quite a walk to the Museum. You will need to walk up the entry road to the main road of New Inn. Turn right and follow the road to the small roundabout and from there, take the first exit, following the road down the hill. At the bottom you will find the large, ornate green gates of Pontypool Park. Now follow the path through the park, past Pontypool Active Living Centre and up to the opposite end where you will find a lane that leads behind the original Pontypool Park House and straight to Torfaen Museum."

"The free car park is located on the right just after crossing the bridge, Pont Ap Hywel, behind the Museum, through the Sight Cymru car park. Car Park: what3words ///star.caves.spot.

Cafe: Serving tea, coffee and cakes, the coffee shop at Amgueddfa Torfaen offers a homely and cozy atmosphere, a place to enjoy a chat with friends. On warmer days, why not spend time outside in our enclosure or under the covered arch of the stable block? And for those who don’t have time to wait a moment, why not pop in and grab a cuppa to go on your journey.

The coffee shop is open during museum opening hours. Last orders 30 mins before closing. "
