Brief description
"Runston Chapel, Mathern, Monmouthshire, Wales, is the ruin of a chapel dating back to the early 12th century. It is the only remaining visible remnant of the medieval village of Runston, although parts of the former domestic dwellings can be identified under turf-covered mounds on the site" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runston_Chapel

"Lonely chapel of a long-lost village:
Standing alone in a field, roofless Runston Chapel cuts a solitary sight these days. However, when it was built in the early 12th century, it was part of the ancient village of Runston, a small settlement of 20 or so houses that existed as early as the 10th century.
The village is now no more than a few ghostly bumps in the ground, but the ivy-covered chapel still retains its nave and perfectly arched chancel."
On a survey visit in September 2022 there was no signposting to this monument and therefore it is very difficult for visitors to find it; It is on a hillside to the south of Runston Farm which is located off the east side of the minor road.
Our photographs were taken along this minor road, and we have also attached a description of the Chapel/church written in a guide of the early 1990s published by Cadw which mainly concentrated on Chepstow Castle.
