Brief description

The South Downs Heritage Centre was built by the Tate family and remains in the family to this date - now into its fifth generation.

With over 60 artists, foodies, makers, gardening history enthusiasts, educators, and volunteers forming the centre; it is home to events, exhibitions, talks, workshops and more.

Directions

South Downs Heritage Centre is located just outside the village of Hassocks in West Sussex. You can reach the centre in approximately 20 minutes travelling by car from Brighton taking the A23 and A273. The Heritage Centre is part of the same complex as South Downs Nurseries and Garden Centre.

From London there are three options. Heading south you could either take the M25, the M23 or the M23 joining the A23.

Monday to Saturday: 9:00-17:30

Transport

Train: The Heritage Centre is a ten-minute walk from Hassocks Train Station. Travelling via train from Brighton, the journey is a speedy 7 minutes. Hassocks is on the mainline travelling from London and there are regular services with an approximate travel time of one hour.

Bus: A bus stop is located directly outside the garden centre. Use bus numbers 270, 271, 272, 273 and 590 (check with the driver for clarification).

Amenities

Public toilets are available and are located within the cafe area.

If you are in need of a little substance, inside the Heritage Centre is Chloe's coffee bar which serves snacks and drinks. If you need something a bit more, next door to the Heritage Centre is The Barn Coffee Shop & Restaurant where home cooked meals are on the menu, along with selection of cakes and speciality coffees. 

The adjoining garden centre has on offer plants, pets & aquatics, gifts and collectables.

A ten-minute walk will get you to the large village of Hassocks. Here you will find some good community facilities, including pubs, a post office, park and a library. There are also a number of boutique shops, local supermarkets, newsagents, cafes and takeaways. 

The centre is also a short car trip to the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, Jack and Jill Windmills, and Ditchling Beacon which is part of the South Downs Way.
