Brief description

"Splotlands Board School on Splott Road opened in July 1882 by Mayor Alfred Thomas.  179 boys were enrolled, 120 from Diamond Street School and 59 who had attended no school at all.  It was built to take 596 boys, 544 girls and 596 infants. The building was designed by William Habershon, architect of the Tredegar Estate.   It was enlarged in 1896.  The school had accommodation for 1,801 children in 1901.  The school stretched from the corner of Railway Street almost as far south as Carlisle Street. The school was used as a military hospital during the First World War. It became Splott Road Secondary Modern from September 1950.  It closed in Jul 1967, when children moved to the new Willows High School which opened in Sept 1967. The building was demolished in around 1971. The giant bell from the old school is on display outside Willows High School.  The land was then used to build the STAR Centre (reportedly an acronym for Splott, Tremorfa, Adamsdown, Roath), which opened in July 1981."
