Brief description

St Andrews is Grade I listed, also called The Cathedral Of The Dales, is at the upper end of the Swaledale Corpse Way. It was built, probably on the site of an old Saxon church, in the twelfth century and was originally staffed by Augustinian monks until the 13th century when a vicar was appointed to be parish priest. It has a chained Bible, a Jacobean pulpit fitted with a sounding board for audibility and a hagioscope to enable parishoners to view the host as it is being lifted during holy communion. The Clarkson memorial in the churchyard is Grade II listed. The church is also home to a colony of protected bats.
