Accessibility

It is advisable to check with Redcar & Cleveland Council first about accessing the church. There is a gateway leading to the church and a rough path leading to the entrance door. The grass round the church may be rough and uneven. St Andrews is not in current use except with permission from the Council. There is a public footpath sign from the road but walkers need to be able to step over a few inches of stone wall in order to access the path which runs across the graveyard.

Brief description

St Andrews is one of the smallest churches in England, having been built on the remains of a larger church. It was originally a 12th century church built on land donated by Guisborough Priory and what remains are the tower, the western part of the nave and the remains of the Lowther Vault which stand on the site. The discovery of a stone cross from the 9th century means that people could have worshipped on this site at an earlier period. It was replaced by another church in the village in 1835 but continued to be used as a mortuary chapel. It is now owned by Redcar & Cleveland Council. There are crumbling gargoyles above the wooden door. The church is as well lit as it can be from the one small window. The floor is rough and crumbling.
