Brief Description:
St Clement Danes is an Anglican church in the City of Westminster. A church built by the Danes has reputedly stood on this site since the 9th century. It was named after St Clements, the patron saint of mariners.
It was rebuilt many times, the current building was completed in 1682 by Sir Christopher Wren, but on the 10th May 1941 during the last air raid of the Blitz, the inside of the church was gutted, only the outer walls, tower and steeple survived the bombing. Following an appeal for money by the Royal Air Force the church was completely rebuilt and re-consecrated on 19 October 1958 and became The Central Church of the Royal Air Force.
It is thought to be the church that features in the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons and the bells do play that tune. However, St Clement's Eastcheap also claims to be the church from the rhyme.
