Details
Accessibility
Entry to St Cuthbert's is through double iron gates then up about 4 steps and along an uneven flagstone path to the church door on the side of the church, or off a side road off Kirkleatham Lane, then up 4 steps to a brick path which leads past a row of houses. It is unsuitable for wheelchairs. One step up leads into the church which is airy and well lit, with ample space in the central aisle separating two sets of semi-boxed wooden pews and a further two aisles, left and right. Decoration is simple, with columns separating the left and right sets of pews.
Brief description
St Cuthbert's, a Grade I listed building, was built in 1763 and is a fine example of Georgian architecture. It is thought to have been built on the site of an earlier church built in 800AD where monks rested the body of St Cuthbert before travelling to Durham. The Mausoleum was built in 1740.
