Accessibility:
There is some on-street parking near to the entrance of the churchyard and along Church Terrace to the north. The pavements around the site are tarmacked and generally flat but where there are trees to the side of the pavement the tarmac has been lifted by roots. There are three gated entrances to the churchyard, all of which have small stone steps up into the churchyard, but the gate on St Margaret's Crescent has a very shallow step. There is a very small step (less than an inch) into the church itself. Disabled access into the church is through the porch. The floor of the church is laid with quarry tiles and is flat and level.
The nearest public toilets with disability facilities are in the Globe Live Music Venue to the west of the church along Albany Road. Further public toilets are available in Roath Park. The Roath Church House also has a disability toilet, but it is open at limited times (please see this website's venue description).
"St. Margaret’s Church was commissioned by the 3rd Marquess of Bute and built in 1870 to designs by John Prichard. It includes stonework and memorials from an ancient church on the same site, which was demolished in 1867. The tower was completed in 1927 to designs by John Coates Carter; the reredos by Ninian Comper in 1925.
Tombs of members of the Bute family, including the 1st Marquess, are located in a magnificent mausoleum built to designs by John Prichard, 1881-86. The mausoleum contains fine carvings, mosaic and stained glass."
Brief Description:
St Margaret of Antioch (St Margaret's Church) is the parish church of Roath, Cardiff. There has been a place of worship on this site since around 1100 ‘the Chapel of Raht’ was founded on the site by Lord Robert Fitzhamon. This first building was replaced in 1870 with the current Grade I listed building, which is constructed from dark sandstone with lighter sandstone windows surrounds and detailing. The churchyard lost most of its gravestones in 1969 when the grounds were cleared. Part of the churchyard wall is medieval.
The church includes a pipe organ and the unique Bute Mausoleum including foliage carving, a brick vault and a mosaic of Christ in Majesty on the west wall.
