There are six steps with handrails that lead up from Church Hill directly into the church. The aisle is flagstone and leads to the altar, two steps up on a hexagonal-shaped platform. There are five banks of pews separated by aisles.
Brief description
St Mary and St Leonard's Roman Catholic church has medieval origins, founded in 1190AD as a Gilbertine Chapel and is probably the oldest Roman Catholic church still in use in England. It houses about 24 pieces of medieval carving and is Grade II listed. The font is believed to be from the 12th century.

Directions
Malton lies just off the A164 York to Scarborough road. The church is accessed either on foot from the B1248 Castlegate Road through a walkway, or by car from the B1257 Old Maltongate road onto Church Hill, leading one way onto the B1248. The church is on the left side of Church Hill with parking at the rear, just before the main entrance. There is no access from the B1248.
