Brief description
"St Mary The Virgin" is a Grade I listed church, built in the early 1300s in the Early English/Decorated Style (12th-14th century). The Chancel, Clerestory, and South Aisle date from this period."
"The carved stone font with cable moulded rim dates from the 12th century. The carved stone Chancel screen is a rare example in the Decorated Style. The piscina and sedilia date from the 14th century and were restored in the mid-1800s."
"There are several medieval monuments within the church; a stone coffin lid (c.13th century), John de Broughton (d.1315), Knight in Armour (d.1350) Sir Thomas Wykeham and his wife (d.1470), William, First Lord Saye and Sele and his wife Elizabeth of Broughton Castle (d.1660s). A fine example of a brass tomb monument to Lady Philippa Bishopsdean (d.1410) can also be seen."
Several medieval wall paintings can be seen on the north wall of the Chancel (1340).
"The 16th-century circular stained-glass windows showing the heraldic panels of the Fiennes Family are all that remains of the previously recorded fifty-two Coats of Arms in 1611. The East Window contains 19th-century Victorian glass by Clayton & Bell (1878) and the West Window contains Munich glass (1860)."
