Brief description
"St Mary's Church" is a Grade I listed building dating from 1180. A building erected on the site is first mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086).
The Chancel and transept were added from the 13th century onwards. The timber roof is original and is over 700 years old.
The piscina, three-seat sedilia and medieval wall paintings date from the 14th century.
The stained-glass windows depicting images of St. Mary and King David have rare early 14th-century glass.
The Church was declared redundant in the 1980s and entrusted to the Church Conservation Trust in 1992.
The Church sits on the 'Old Way,' a 250-mile Pilgrimage Route between Southampton and Canterbury, linking British pilgrims with European routes. It is also a member of the Small Pilgrim Places.
Resident bats occupy the church interior.
