Accessibility:

There is a metalled track leading up to a level car park next to the church yard entrance.  The path leading to the door of the church is very level and well-maintained but the threshold does have two shallow steps (3" each) to negotiate. There are marked areas inside the church where the floor is uneven.

Brief Description:

The Grade I listed Church of St Mary, located on the west bank of the River Caerhun, dates from the 13th century and was most likely founded by the Cistercians of Maenan Abbey.

It is located on the site of the Canovium Roman fort and may have even been built from the sandstone that the Roman's brought from Cheshire to construct the original fort. The present nave may have formed the original church building, with a porch and chancel added in the 15th century. The porch was converted to a vestry in the 1800s so the south entrance is now the vestry door.

There is a medieval stone panel bearing a crucifix over the door and a double style bellcote that bears no evidence of there ever being more than one bell. On the south transept is a stone dated 1591 and bearing initials EW and GW and the Gwydir Arms.

Renovations were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries with a medieval Holy Water stoup and some bones being discovered in 1972. The stoup is now inside the church to the right of the door.

There is plenty of information in the church about its origins and that of the Roman fort, with diagrams and information boards.
