St Mary's is accessed from the street up a flat path veering to the right, up one step, stepping over the threshold and minding the door as the notice says (2022) then down one step into the church. A movable ramp is available on request. Hearing loops are available. An audio system is available to ensure that everyone can hear the service wherever they are in the church. The floors are even and tiled. The church is fairly dark in the places where there is no light from the windows. Pews are semi-boxed and raised off floor level.
Brief description
St Mary's, a Grade 1 listed building, dates from the 13th century and was built on the site of an 8th century Anglo-Saxon monastery. It is recorded that Edwine, an 8th century monk, was buried at Gainford. St Mary's has several sepulchral stones and Saxon crosses as well as a Roman altar. The 13th century font has a Jacobean style cover and there are three medieval brasses in the chancel. There are also some spectacular stained glass windows

Opening Times
The church is open daily from 9am - 5pm but always check with the venue directly for up-to-date information including opening times and admission charges as they may be subject to change.
Transport
Gainford lies half way between Darlington and Barnard Castle just off the A167. There are buses every hour or so both ways. The church is on a corner of the village green, south of the main road. Turn left just after the blue surgery building on the left from Darlington and follow the road round the green to the left. St Mary's is at the far end of the green.

Accessible toilets are available. Tea and coffee may be available after Sunday Holy Communion but please check in advance.
