Brief description
"Saint Nicholas Lodge, llfracombe, was consecrated on 7 April 1947, and meets in
the same temple as its mother lodge, Lodge of Concord No. 1135. In the
immediate post war period it was considered that there was sufficient masonic
interest for a second Craft lodge to he established in the town. The new lodge was
to cater for, but not exclusively the rapidly expanding popular holiday villages of
Woolacombe and Combe Martin on either side of Ilfracombe. At the Consecration
of the new lodge, the Presiding officer was Bro The Lord Bishop of Crediton,
ProvGM. The founders came from Lodge of Concord No.1135 and Loyal Lodge,
Barnstaple, No. 251. The lodge takes its name from Saint Nicholas, the Patron
Saint of Sailors and is one of twelve lodges in England so dedicated.
The lodge crest depicts the 14th Century Chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas
which stands on Lantern Hill, overlooking llfracombe harbour. The lodge has a fine
banner, presented by Mrs Francis Howard Paget in
memory of her late husband, a member of the
Lodge. As befits its dedication, the closing ode sung
at the conclusion of each meeting is the sailors
hymn - ‘Eternal Father, Strong to Save’.
The Lodge meets at the Masonic TempIe, Northfield
Road, llfracombe on the third Wednesday, March to
June and September to December."
