I’ve worked for a company that’s been taking ex YHA hostels into private ownership.
This doesn’t necessarily mean it stops becoming a hostel, chances are that the lower rate was agreed in exchange for the new owners to be running it as a “YHA Partner” hostel. Basically as a franchise where they piggyback off some of the YHA branding in exchange for commission.
If anything, it may mean that the hostel will likely get a decent refurbishment and will be run independently. It’s usually quite difficult to repurpose the use of the building to a residence for example (with the local council). Since YHA’s are usually listed buildings and also have an established use for the local community."
