Brief description

2026:

"Founded by the Romans and built from the same beautiful, local limestone that was used for York Minster, the historic brewery town of Tadcaster is complete with lovely shops and cafes and is surrounded by beautiful countryside.

You can walk along the River Wharfe and see the town’s listed 18th century bridge or visit the beautiful 15th century St Mary’s Church. The magnificent stained-glass window, designed by William Morris & Co. is believed to hold two panels created by the designer himself.

With a fantastic array of cosy pubs selling fine ales and three historic breweries, including the oldest brewery in Yorkshire, it’s the perfect place to stop off for a relaxing few hours. Whilst you’re there, you may even see the Shire horse and cart making one of its beer deliveries to the town’s pubs. As well as a fantastic array of pubs, there are also a pick of tearooms to choose from.

There is much to offer local people and visitors attracted to this historic market town with car parks located in the heart of the town.

Not far from Tadcaster you’ll find historic Towton Battlefield, the site of a major battle during the War of the Roses, often described as the largest  battle ever fought on English soil. Find out more at the information centre in the grounds of the Crooked Billet pubin Saxton and walk the battlefield trail and see where Henry VI’s men faced the army of Edward IV."
