Accessibility

There is not an on-site car park for the museum, but pay and display parking is available directly in front of the museum. Blue badge holders can park free of charge with a valid displayed badge in a pay and display parking space.

The entrance of the museum is reached via eight steps with one handrail to the side. Inside the museum there are a further two steps.

At the rear of the building, level wheelchair access is available and there is an intercom which can be used to request access.

Loans of wheelchairs are available and the venue requests that visitors using mobility scooters leave them at the front entrance and use one of their wheelchairs. If you will not have a companion with you for your visit, you can arrange some help by contacting the museum in advance.

The museum has a hearing induction loop fitted.

There is overhead lighting allowing for the museum to be well lit - although please note the butterfly collection has low lighting for conservation purposes.

The floor is on one level and mostly carpeted. Some of the aisles have iron heated grates on the floor.

There is lots of seating available.

Assistance dogs are welcome in the museum.

Please note that most of the displays are in glass cases with some being at a high level. The labelling of exhibits may not always be clear due to their historical nature.

Brief description

Opened in 1874 by collector and naturalist Edward Thomas Booth, the Booth Museum gives an insight into natural history with a focus on Victorian taxidermy.

The museum is home to one of the country’s largest collections of taxidermied birds and also houses over half a million specimens - including butterflies, bones and fossils.

Directions

Brighton is approximately a 1.5-2 hour car journey from London.

If travelling from London, follow the A4 to M4, then take the M25 and M23 to the A23 in West Sussex. Continue along the A23 and drive to Dyke Rd Ave in Brighton and Hove.

The museum is located on the outskirts of Brighton opposite Dyke Road Park.

Opening Times

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10.00-17.00 (Please note the museum is closed between 12noon and 13.15).

The museum is closed on Thursdays.

Open Sunday 14.00-17.00.

The museum is open on Bank Holidays, but closed from the 24th to the 26th of December.

Transport

Train: The journey time from London to Brighton is just under an hour, and there are regular services departing from London Bridge and London Victoria. Other train services from the east coast and west coast travel into the city. The journey from both Brighton Station and Hove Station is approximately 20 minutes on foot to the museum.

Bus: Bus numbers 27 and 77 travelling from central Brighton and from Brighton Train Station stop close to the Booth Museum on Dyke Road. For further information please click here.

Amenities

A gift shop is located at the front of the museum.

The museum does not have a cafe, but you will find one located over the road in Dyke Road Park. The park is a green space with walking paths, a rose garden and sea views.

Accessible toilets and Baby Changing Facilities are available inside the museum and there are further toilets located over the road in Dyke Road Park.
